Prickly pears: a special fruit, but with some thorns ☘️

I prickly pears are among the most fascinating fruits of Sicily: sweet, juicy and colorful, but also… prickly!
Before enjoying them or turning them into a delicious jam, it is important to know how to peel them properly to avoid unpleasant encounters with their microspines.

How to peel prickly pears: step by step

Follow these simple steps to safely clean prickly pears:

  1. Wear kitchen gloves to protect your hands from the thin but stinging thorns.
  2. Rinse the prickly pears under running water, helping yourself with a small brush or cloth to remove any remaining thorns.
  3. Cut off the top and bottom ends of the fruit with a sharp knife.
  4. Incise the peel vertically, along the side of the fruit, with a cut about 1 cm deep.
  5. Lift the peel with the knife blade or your fingers, being careful not to touch the outside. The pulp will separate easily.
  6. Discard the peel and enjoy the fruit, or use it in sweet and savory preparations.

⏱ When to peel them?

The best time to peel prickly pears is just before consuming or using them in cooking, to preserve their freshness and juiciness.
You can store them peeled in the refrigerator for 1-2 days, in an airtight container.
