BIO oranges: why it is important to buy them and how to recognize them

Organic oranges contain about 30% more vitamin C than other types on the market, as well as being more nutritious and rich in fiber and antioxidants.

This is what emerged during the Great Lakes Regional meeting organized by the American Chemical Society, in which all the positive aspects of buying BIO oranges are highlighted.

During this meeting, Theo Clark, illustrious professor of biochemistry, wanted to highlight the results that emerged from the research, in order to clarify the doubts related to the lack of information relating to the absence of analytical data on the nutritional contents of BIO products.

In particular, Clark focused on analyzing the orange (his first study target) as it was evaluated as the fruit par excellence, which contains a high nutritional profile: this citrus fruit, in fact, contains a large amount of vitamin C.

However, the peculiarity of the professor’s study lies in the comparison between an organic orange and one treated with pesticides.

The last ones have a greater volume than the BIO ones and a more decisive color. These characteristics could lead the consumer to think that these contain a lot of vitamin C but this belief has been disproved by the analyzes conducted: the smallest oranges contain about 30% of vitamin C.

The reasons for this are not entirely clear but it is believed that the use of fertilizers can affect the amount of vitamin C produced by the fruit.

In fact, the treated oranges are used nitrogen fertilizers which, resulting in greater assimilation of water, would cause a dilution of the vitamins present in the fruit.

But how do you recognize an ORGANIC orange? It’s very simple, you need to read the label. The words “organic” or “natural product” are not enough, but the certification must also be present, recognizable by the symbol of the “BIO” trademark.

Buying an organic orange is a right and conscious choice that will be rewarded by the many positive qualities of the fruit. One of these, its intense aroma that recalls that of Sicilian citrus groves. But also the richness of nutrients, such as vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber. Furthermore, being an untreated orange, even its peel can be used for the preparation of tasty dishes, both sweet and savory.

Lastly, no less important reason, by choosing to buy oranges that do not belong to large-scale distribution, you can help the farms that produce them, supporting the work of farmers, whose primary purpose is to guarantee the quality of the product.
